Sanlam is a leading financial services company. It operates in various countries in Africa and in India and the UK. The Group employs about 9,500 office staff and about 1,400 advisors.

Navit provides architecture and program management services to Sanlam on an ongoing basis since 2003. Major assignment in which Navit participated:

  • Client Portal & IAM project.
As part of their e-Business strategy Sanlam initiated a Client Portal & IAM project. The portal provides electronic services via the web for Individual and Institutional Clients and is a shared infrastructure for businesses of the Sanlam Group. The IAM Services are implemented by making use of the IBM Identity Manager and Access Manager products.
  • Strategic IAM Architecture.
Navit was responsible for the development of a ‘Strategic IAM Architecture’ for the Sanlam Group which consists of a conceptual and logical architecture. The initial focus was aimed at internal IAM for the workforce, however the focus expanded to external IAM since Sanlam required an IAM architecture that supports its business strategy for their clients and partners as well. The IAM Architecture allows for shared IAM services across the Sanlam Group. The deliverables also included a migration strategy, a business case and a program roadmap.
  • Directory Services.
Prior to the IAM assignments, Navit had the architecture and program management lead for the design phase of a Directory Services project for the Sanlam Group. This included the delivery of a Directory Services Architecture Blueprint, Migration strategy and Deployment plan.

Metropolitan is an insurance company which provides financial solutions throughout Southern Africa. Metropolitan is a JSE Top 100 company and provides employment to approximately 8,000 people and deals with approximately 1,500 brokers.

Navit developed an IAM Architecture for all businesses within the Metropolitan Group. The deliverable includes IAM architecture principles, models and patterns. It provided the architecture framework for subsequent IAM solution designs and implementations. Other deliverables were a Business value proposition and a Program Roadmap.

Business Connexion (BCX) is one of Africa’s leading ICT companies. Its head office is located in Johannesburg, South Africa. BCX has branches in all major countries throughout Africa and operates in the UK and Dubai. The company employs more than 6,800 employees.

In 2005, BCX procured a license on Navit’s IAM Architecture Development Kit and contracted Navit exclusively to deliver consultancy services to their clients amongst which are major corporations within Southern Africa such as Nampak, AngloGold Ashanti, Shoprite, Vodacom, etc. In addition Navit was assigned to provide IAM training to the BCX Business Consulting division. During this time frame we also worked closely with the BCX Outsourcing division and undertook joint initiatives with IAM solution providers like Computer Associates, Novell, Microsoft, Sun Microsystems, and IBM.

T-Systems in South Africa delivers end-to-end IT and telecommunications solutions. T-Systems is the business customer brand of Deutsche Telekom and has world-wide 56,000 employees.

Navit was responsible for the delivery of a Directory Services and Messaging Architecture Blueprint for T-Systems South Africa. It contained the migration strategy, the governance structure, administration and delegation model and object life-cycle model. It also included a roadmap for deployment.

In addition, we designed the integration of Microsoft Active Directory with the existing world-wide identity management system based on Sun ONE Directory Server. For this purpose we worked closely with representatives from the T-Systems head office in Germany. The delivered Architecture Blueprint was subsequently used as a standard for T-Systems International.

Towards the end of this assignment we came into contact with Andreas Luther of Microsoft who was the Group program manager for Microsoft Identity Integration Server (MIIS) in Redmond. On his request, Navit wrote a white paper regarding architecture patterns for a similar solution based upon Microsoft products only.
